Commonly Asked Questions About Synchro
1. What skill level or prerequisites does my skater need to try out?
Richmond Synchro welcomes skaters at all developmental stages! For our introductory Aspire 1 teams, skaters generally need basic forward and backward skating skills, stopping ability, and single-foot glides (typically around Learn to Skate Basic 3–4 or equivalent). For higher Aspire levels (Aspire 2–4) and competitive divisions, skaters will be evaluated on edge work, turns (three-turns, mohawks), speed, and team alignment. Tryouts are designed as a supportive placement process to match every skater with the team where they will thrive and gain confidence.
2. How are skaters placed, and what if my child is new to synchronized skating?
Prior synchronized skating experience is not required! Our professional coaching staff evaluates each skater based on individual skating skills, speed, musicality, and adaptability during tryouts. Following evaluations, skaters are placed on a team (Aspire 1 through Aspire 4 or competitive tracks) based on skill level, age guidelines set by U.S. Figure Skating, and overall team chemistry. Every skater who tries out will receive a placement or a clear developmental path to join when ready.
3. What should my skater wear and bring to tryout day?
Skaters should arrive in form-fitting, athletic skating attire so coaches can clearly observe posture, body alignment, and movement.
Clothing: Black leggings or fitted skating pants, a fitted jacket or long-sleeve athletic top, and thin skating socks/tights.
Hair: Neatly styled in a clean, secure bun or pulled back out of the face.
Equipment: Properly fitted figure skates (sharpened prior to tryout day), guards, and a water bottle. Please avoid loose clothing, baggy hoodies, or heavy winter coats on the ice.
4. What is the time commitment and practice schedule for the season?
Richmond Synchro programs are structured to balance high-level athletic growth with school and family commitments.
Practice: Teams typically practice 1 to 2 times per week, combining on-ice choreography and edge work with off-ice conditioning, body alignment, and team bonding.
Competitions & Exhibitions: The season runs through the fall and winter, including local exhibitions and 2 to 4 regional competitions (depending on the team level). A full schedule of mandatory practices and competition dates is provided upon team placement.
5. What are the financial obligations, and do teams travel?
Total costs vary depending on team level (Aspire vs. competitive tracks). Typical expenses cover ice time, professional coaching fees, competition entry fees, team costumes, and administrative dues.
Travel: Introductory Aspire teams participate primarily in regional Virginia/Mid-Atlantic events with minimal travel, while higher-level teams may travel to regional competitions across the East Coast.
Payment Plans: Detailed fee breakdowns and flexible monthly payment schedules are provided in the season welcome packet upon contract signing.
